Kristy Kemp, Breastfeeding Advocate, Outraged When Nursing Photos Were Removed From Facebook

Facebook's community standards explicitly state that it is acceptable to share breastfeeding photos on the social network, and yet another mom has found herself in hot water after uploading nursing images.

Kristy Kemp, who runs the support page Breastfeeding Mama Talk on Facebook, was locked out of her page after one of its 4,300 fans posted a photo of a toddler at the breast. The image was removed because it "'violated" Facebook policy, Fox40 reports.

After Kemp's 24-hour lock-out was over, she went ahead and posted a photo of a different mom feeding her baby and her 5-year-old at the same time. That photo, shown below, was also removed.

?It?s not right. I?m trying to do good for mothers and I?m getting kicked off for posting pictures of the most beautiful act a mother can do her for kid. It?s not right,? Kemp told Fox40.

Gina Crosley-Corcoran, who runs The Feminist Breeder and has been in a similar situation to Kemp, joined HuffPost Live yesterday to discuss the controversy around posting images of breastfeeding online . (In November, Crosley-Corcoran was banned from Facebook after her breastfeeding photo went viral.) The mother and advocate told HuffPost Live that it's important to normalize the sight of a mother feeding her child and to change the "cultural context" around breastfeeding.

But in February 2012, when Emma Kwasnica saw her photos removed from Facebook and staged a subsequent nurse-in to protest at their headquarters, Facebook sent the following statement to HuffPost via email to clarify their policy:

"We agree that breastfeeding is natural and we are very glad to know that it is important for mothers, including the many mothers who work at Facebook, to share their experience with others on the site. The vast majority of breastfeeding photos are compliant with our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities and Facebook takes no action on such content. However, photos which contain a fully exposed breast, do violate our terms and may be removed if they are reported to us. These policies are based on the same standards that apply to television and print media. It is important to note that photos upon which we act are almost exclusively brought to our attention by other users who complain about them being shared on Facebook."

In Kemp's case, representatives told Fox40 that "the removal was an error and the company apologizes." Kemp has gained access to her page, the news outlet reports.

Legendary Film Critic Roger Ebert's Cancer Returns, Takes 'Leave ...

Roger Ebert?s?devastating cancer has returned, forcing the legendary film critic to take what he calls a ?leave of presence? from his duties at the Chicago Sun-Times, where he has worked for exactly 46-years.

?The ?painful fracture? that made it difficult for me to walk has recently been revealed to be a cancer,? the beloved Ebert, 70, wrote in his online journal Tuesday. ?It is being treated with radiation, which has made it impossible for me to attend as many movies as I used to. I have been watching more of them on screener copies that the studios have been kind enough to send to me?

?At this point in my life, in addition to writing about movies, I may write about what it?s like to cope with health challenges and the limitations they can force upon you. Ebert ? a Pulitzer Prize winner who became a household name co-hosting movie review shows with the late Chicago Tribune film critic Gene Siskel and later with columnist Richard Roeper?? was first diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2002 and cancerous growths in his salivary glands in 2003. Sadly, complications from the devastating disease and numerous surgeries left him without a lower jaw or the ability to eat or speak.

Unfortunately, his health struggles didn?t end there ? Ebert fractured his hip in 2008 and again last December. His latest injury, which made it difficult for him to walk, was recently diagnosed as cancer. He?s currently undergoing radiation treatments.

In the meantime, Ebert will continue to coordinate with filmmakers Martin Scorsese, Steve James, and Steve Zaillian on a bio-documentary about his life and storied career. He will also remain active on social media, RogerEbert.com and Ebert Digital, which is headed by his devoted wife, Chaz.

Ebert says he?ll also continue to write and review movies on a selected basis. His announcement came on the eve of his 46th anniversary as the film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times.

In 1975, he became the first film critic to win the Pulitzer Prize.

Geckos keep firm grip in wet natural habitat

Geckos' ability to stick to trees and leaves during rainforest downpours has fascinated scientists for decades, leading a group of University of Akron researchers to solve the mystery.

They discovered that wet, hydrophobic (water-repellent) surfaces like those of leaves and tree trunks secure a gecko's grip similar to the way dry surfaces do. The finding brings UA integrated bioscience doctoral candidate Alyssa Stark and her research colleagues closer to developing a synthetic adhesive that sticks when wet.

Principal investigator Stark and her fellow UA researchers Ila Badge, Nicholas Wucinich, Timothy Sullivan, Peter Niewiarowski and Ali Dhinojwala study the adhesive qualities of gecko pads, which have tiny, clingy hairs that stick like Velcro to dry surfaces. In a 2012 study, the team discovered that geckos lose their grip on wet glass. This finding led the scientists to explore how the lizards function in their natural environments.

The scientists studied the clinging power of six geckos, which they outfitted with harnesses and tugged upon gently as the lizards clung to surfaces in wet and dry conditions. The researchers found that the effect of water on adhesive strength correlates with wettability, or the ability of a liquid to maintain contact with a solid surface. On glass, which has high wettability, a film of water forms between the surface and the gecko's foot, decreasing adhesion. Conversely, on surfaces with low wettability, such as waxy leaves on tropical plants, the areas in contact with the gecko's toes remain dry and adhesion, firm.

"The geckos stuck just as well under water as they did on a dry surface, as long as the surface was hydrophobic," Stark explains. "We believe this is how geckos stick to wet leaves and tree trunks in their natural environment."

The discovery, "Surface Wettability Plays a Significant Role in Gecko Adhesion Underwater," was published April 1, 2013 by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study has implications for the design of a synthetic gecko-inspired adhesive.
