Libya church blast kills two Egyptians: embassy

AFP - An explosion rocked a Christian Coptic church near the western Libyan city of Misrata on Sunday, killing two people and wounding two others, all of them Egyptians, an Egyptian diplomat told AFP.

"Two Egyptians were killed and two were wounded," said the diplomat at the Egyptian embassy in Tripoli who declined to be named.

"The church explosion was in the town of Dafniya in Misrata (province). The consul went directly to Misrata to find out the details. We still don't have clear information," the diplomat said.

Earlier, a security official said one Egyptian was killed and three others were wounded in the blast at a Coptic church. The Egyptian diplomat said that one of those hurt in the explosion died later at the hospital.

Residents said the explosion took place in the early afternoon at a Coptic church in Dafniya, a Mediterranean town 30 kilometres (18.5 miles) west of Misrata, where brigades made up of former rebels hold a major checkpoint.

America Became Real Estate Value Leader in 2012 - TheNicheReport

?

Considering that our 2008 housing crash is held as a major lynchpin for the worldwide recession, it would seem odd to hold up our housing market as exceptionally healthy. However, it appears that a strengthening of various market foundations have turned our real estate into one of the world?s most promising property investments.

As I?d mentioned in a previous post, the burgeoning health of the American property market has not gone unnoticed by foreign financiers. In fact, Sweden?s Sovereign Wealth Fund publicly announced an upcoming purchase of $11 billion in American property holdings. This would be the investing body?s first purchase of foreign real estate, and represents an unambiguous endorsement of the growth value of American property holdings. Yngve Slyngstad, Norges Bank Investment Management chief economic officer affirmed national sentiment, stating directly, ?The U.S. is the next real estate market to invest in.?

However, despite the bullish actions of external investors, much of the strength in the American housing market has been motivated by internal factors. This year?s Q3 reports from both major lending bodies as well as financial analysts painted a newly positive picture of the housing market. The rate of mortgage defaults has dropped appreciably, and this has occurred in tandem with a rise in home closes. Ultimately, we?ve seemed to clear the fence in terms of the default wave, and many Americans who had been hesitant to seek new purchases in the post-recession are unfreezing their assets and moving en masse to settle on homes.

To return to a global perspective, new reports are emerging which point to a distinctly different outlook for real estate investing across the western world as a whole. According to a new release from Bloomberg, economic growth outlook across the EU appears to be stagnating. The U.K. in particular seems caught in a stumble, as retail and consumer spending dipped last month, an inverse trajectory from that observed in the United States. The swift return in American consumer confidence seems motivated largely by the return of the housing market. While our export sales and new business investment remained relatively stable throughout even the immediate post-crash period, the newfound strength in the housing market is co-reinforcing business development and consumer spending.

The positive macroeconomic trends in our housing market are working in dual effort with broader market gains, and are now?marshaling?consumer confidence in the domestic market. These differing market silos are cross-pollinating our market recovery, and seem to be the reason why the United States housing market has become a comparative leader. As the previously mentioned Bloomberg report outlines, the growth in the U.S. economy outstripped Commerce Department projections, growing 3.1% annually above the predicted 2.7%. The crucial housing market health metrics have all demonstrated growth this year, with turnover, home starts, and median home prices rising on a national scale.

Other economic power players have not reported similarly positive returns in FY2012. Japan continues to experience problematic rates of inflation, which has consequentially extended their national recession. However, America?s climbing volume of new building permits as well as a surge in home appliance and furniture sales indicate that momentum is maintaining across various segments of our housing market. Whether or not these indicators translate into persistent growth in FY2013 ultimately remains to be seen.

Best videos of 2012: Sea lice reduce pig to bones

Joanna Carver, reporter

This underwater pig feast comes in at number 5 in our best videos of 2012 countdown.

Who knew sea lice were so industrious? This time-lapse shows how they quickly devour a dead pig in an experiment probing how bodies decompose underwater. After four days, the carcass is reduced to bones before shrimp sneak in to dine on the cartilage.

The cage prevents large predators like sharks from tucking in. But it doesn't prevent an octopus from trying to access the pig's remains at the end of the clip.

Gail Anderson of Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, and colleagues are studying the process to see how seasonal changes and depth can affect decomposition. To find out more about the research, check out the original article, "Sea lice mob devours pig from inside out".

If you enjoyed this post, watch an elephant carcass ravaged by wild animals or a dead pig mimic how smokers decay.

Jet lag: Canada?s toughest opponent at WJHC?

THE CANADIAN PRESS

CALGARY -- The puck drop for Canada's first three games at the world junior hockey championship in Russia is 4:30 a.m. ET.

Host city Ufa is 10 to 14 hours ahead of the Canadian players' body clocks, depending on what part of the country they're from. A Canadian junior team hasn't travelled this far, or crossed this many times zones, since the 2001 tournament in Moscow. Ufa is another 1,160 kilometres and two time zones to the southeast.

Jet lag and travel fatigue will be major challenges, barriers as significant on the road to gold as the Russians, Swedes and Americans.

Hockey Canada enlisted the expertise of Calgary sleep specialist Dr. Charles Samuels to draw up a plan to combat jet lag and sleep deprivation.

"I've met with sleep doctors, sports psychologists, neuropsychologists," Canadian head coach Steve Spott said. "I've met with just about every doctor possible."

Anyone who flies across time zones has experienced the sleep disturbances, fatigue, impaired concentration and digestive problems that occur until the body adapts to the new environment.

The accepted rule is it takes a day for every hour of time difference to adapt. Samuels aims to accelerate the adjustment by a few days.

Travel fatigue gets less attention than jet lag, he says, but for athletes who travel to far-flung places a lot, it can be damaging to performance. The cumulative effects of extensive travel fatigue the body and mind. Even though the Canadian team is travelling to Ufa once, the sheer distance and time spent on planes can catch up with them later.

Samuels drew up Canada's plan from a template he created for the Vancouver Canucks in their 2011 Stanley Cup final against the Boston Bruins.

"That's an extreme example because you're coast to coast, Boston to Vancouver," Samuels said. "We take that experience and translate it to this, which is even more extreme.

"It's basically a survival situation if you look at the frequency of games, the time of the games and then the fact there's virtually no time to recover before the finals."

The Canadian team is currently in pre-competition training in Finland, which is a four-hour time difference from Ufa. The players were on a strict schedule from the moment the wheels went up on their flight from Calgary on Saturday.

One of the worst things a team can do, says Samuels, is get on the plane exhausted. But it was inevitable the players would feel some fatigue after a stressful selection camp.

"We really talked about on the flight, eye shades, ear plugs, noise cancellation headphones, all the pillows and comfort you need and the plane is for rest. No screwing around," Samuels said. "You're not watching movies, you're not playing cards, you're not doing anything. You're either sleeping or your eyes are closed and you are resting."

Taking synthetic melatonin supplements, scheduled exposure to light and dark, and shifting meal times towards the destination are all elements of the Canadian team's plan.

If it's time for light exposure and there isn't any, the team has hand-held lights called Litebooks with them.

The company's website cites NASA research that shows scheduled exposure to a specific type of light, as well as timed avoidance of light, can speed the shifting of the body clock.

"We're using these Litebooks because there's limited light in Ufa and in Helsinki," explained Scott Salmond, senior director of hockey operations. "We're planning on one Litebook per three players and players have to spend a set amount of time around that light."

"When it is light outside, we plan on getting outside and we're going to go for walk. Our schedule in Finland is based very much on what our schedule will be like in Ufa and we're trying to change our clocks, even though we're in Helsinki and we're four hours different," Salmond continued.

"We've got a day-by-day plan on how we deal with jet lag and that includes what kind of activities we're doing and what times of the day we're going to meet and what time we're actually scheduling rest for players."

Canada plays the host Finns in an exhibition game Thursday and another against Sweden on Saturday before travelling to Ufa the following day. Their first game is Dec. 26 versus Germany.

Canada's opening three games are at 3:30 p.m., local time, which means no pre-game skate in the morning. Samuels is pleased about that because he sees those skates as simply draining players of precious energy they'll need later in the tournament.

"I'm respectful of the coaches," he said. "But I tell them 'Don't be pushing these guys because there's no upside.' There are very fit athletes and the most important thing is not draining them. Overtraining them is way worse than undertraining them."

Compact tournaments like the world juniors are an emotional roller-coaster as a country's fortunes can change on one goal. The players' brains will be in overdrive during games and they'll feel wired and unable to sleep when they return to the hotel.

"The bottom line is every effort goes into reducing cumulative sleep debt," Samuels said. "By the time they get to the finals, they've accumulated a lot of sleep debt."

Thirteen players on Canada's team travelled to Yaroslavl, which is 250 kilometres northeast of Moscow, for a pair of games against the Russians in August.

"It's definitely tough," forward Mark Scheifele said. "It's a big transition with the time change and being in a different country, there's definitely a little bit of culture shock.

"I found the biggest thing was the sleep patterns. You're changing 10 or 11 hours. It's a big time change, but the trainers and the doctors are helping out as much as possible. By the end of our time in Russia, I was sleeping great."

Analysis: Huge mandate for Japan's LDP may be less than meets the eye

TOKYO (Reuters) - Even Japan's next prime minister, Shinzo Abe, realizes that his party's landslide election victory is not the sweeping mandate that it appears at first blush.

An analysis of the vote as well as Abe's own comments, suggests he would be best served by focusing on what matters most to voters - the economy - and steering clear of divisive issues such as revising Japan's pacifist constitution.

That said, aggressive moves by China in a territorial row over tiny islands in the East China Sea could act to bolster support for Abe's tough-talking stance toward its giant rival.

Three years after a crushing defeat, Abe's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) surged back to win 294 seats in Sunday's vote for the 480-member lower house.

Together with a smaller ally, the New Komeito party, the LDP also took a two-thirds 'super majority' that could help break Japan's persistent policy deadlock in parliament.

The ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), in comparison, managed a mere 57 seats - less than a fifth of its showing when it swept into power for the first time in a historic 2009 vote.

Abe himself, however, admitted the victory was more a rejection of the novice Democrats' messy reign than a vote of confidence for the LDP, which ruled Japan for most of the past half-century before its ouster three years ago.

"Our victory this time does not mean trust in the Liberal Democratic Party has been completely restored. Rather, it was a decision by the public that they should put an end to the political stagnation and confusion over the past three years, caused by the Democratic Party's misguided political leadership," Abe told a news conference on Monday.

"We must move forward and achieve results."

Japanese voters have been on a roller coaster of hopes and disappointment for the past decade since charismatic leader Junichiro Koizumi took office in 2001 pledging bold reforms.

Lured by Koizumi's promises, voters handed the LDP a massive victory in 2005 only to kick out the long-ruling party four years later in hopes that the Democrats would do a better job.

In a sign that both enthusiasm and expectations are fading, turnout on Sunday was a record low 59 percent, according to a Kyodo news agency estimate.

Nor did the LDP win a majority of votes from those who did cast their ballots. The main opposition party won about 43 percent of the vote in the single-seat constituencies that supply 300 of the chamber's seats, but a first-past-the post system and split votes amongst a clutch of new, small parties meant that the party secured 79 percent of those seats.

JULY ELECTION HURDLE

In the proportional representation blocks that provide the other 180 seats, the LDP won about 28 percent of the votes compared to 16 percent for the DPJ, while the new right-leaning Japan Restoration Party took 20 percent, media estimates showed.

"It's clear that only 30 percent or less of voters solidly support the LDP. Unless Abe is careful, his cabinet support will go down to that level very quickly and even with a two-thirds majority, he would be in trouble," said Sophia University political science professor Koichi Nakano.

Abe, who quit in 2007 after a troubled year in office, will have to persuade voters quickly that they made the right choice ahead of an election for parliament's upper chamber in July.

Although the LDP-New Komeito "super majority" will allow the lower house to enact bills rejected by the upper chamber, doing so is a time-consuming and cumbersome process, so the new government will be keen to win a majority in July's poll.

"He's preparing for the next election and understands that what he does in the first few months will have a big impact and voters are most interested in the economy," said Jeff Kingston, director of Asian studies at Temple University's Japan campus.

Abe has vowed to rescue Japan from its fourth recession since 2000, end deflation and tame the strong yen with a recipe of hyper-easy monetary policy and big spending on public works.

Equally central to his agenda, however, is a push to shed the shackles of Japan's post-war pacifism by revising the U.S.-drafted constitution and rewriting wartime history with a less apologetic tinge.

Changing the charter - never altered since its adoption in 1947 - requires approval by two-thirds of both houses of parliament and a majority of voters in a national referendum.

Straw polls of voters suggest that the economy tops the list of public priorities and LDP ally New Komeito is not keen on revising the constitution's pacifist Article 9.

But a strong showing by the nationalist Japan Restoration Party in the election also indicates simmering support for a tough stance towards China as well as hope for a decisive leader to restore Japan's flagging self-respect.

That could grow if Beijing steps up its activities in waters and airspace near the disputed islands, known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China.

Last week, a Chinese government plane entered what Japan considers its airspace over the islets in the East China Sea, prompting Japanese fighters to scramble and escalating tension in the row between Asia's two biggest economies.

"This has not been a strong mandate for Abe in foreign policy or security matters," said Narushige Michishita, an associate professor at the National Institute for Policy Studies. "But if China continues to provoke us as they did several days ago, that might change."

Watch Zero Dark Thirty Online Free

One important thing I usually do within my spare time is to download forthcoming flicks on the internet. When you're downloading motion pictures online, make sure that you do have a reliable and steady connection to avoid some disturbances as the process of downloading proceeds. It is also an important aspect to check the host and also the site where you download the movie simply because you can?t afford to get your system corrupted as a result of unknown hazards of computer viruses in addition to low quality cam-grabbed copy of the flicks that you might want to download. It's ideal to check the remarks of individuals who had downloaded the certain flick as it shows or points out the grade of the film that you're going to select. When I was at the entire process of searching for an approaching film before this year comes to an end, I find myself looking at a piece of writing post of a certain film relating to a battle in Iraq. The movie has a title that will not usually believe that it is a flick about war or an action motion picture as it says Zero Dark Thirty, much more a horror or a suspense thriller film, yet after seeing this movie, I was partially right because I really was thrilled. If you are intending to watch Zero Dark Thirty online free, this will explain to you the way a special operations forces mission to capture or kill Osama bin Laden occurred. This approaching action thriller film is reported as "the tale of history's best manhunt for the world's most dangerous person". Many of us are interested to understand the actual way it all happened, but if I were you, you need to watch Zero Dark Thirty online free on its release date which will be on the 19th of December 2012.You ought to watch Zero Dark Thirty online free to see its exclusive cast which includes some brand new and old faces in the movie industry that includes superstars such as Jessica Chastain, Chris Pratt, Joel Edgerton and Nash Edgerton actively playing as members of SEAL Team Six, Mark Strong as a CIA officer, Edgar Ramirez, Jennifer Ehle, Ricky Sekhon, Kyle Chandler as the CIA's top strategist located in Pakistan, Nina Arianda, Taylor Kinney, and Scott Adkins.I seriously want to watch Zero Dark Thirty online free for the director Kathryn Bigelow. In accordance with a motion picture review that I?ve read about this film, Kathryn Bigelow is the 1st female to get an Oscars for Best Director thanks to her successful motion picture, The Hurt Locker. This particular motion picture is the head start of Jeremy Renner?s fame in Hollywood. The Hurt Locker also gained numerous awards from the Academy like the Best Director for Bigelow.

Gifts for Gadget Lovers

Prices given for these items reflect the listed retail price at the time of publication.

Every year I try to keep an eye out for innovative toys. That?s partly because I like techie things, but mostly because I love toys. When I say this, readers often question my maturity. Also, when I told my wife the other day that I?d be spending my afternoon playing with a Furby, she looked into getting our union annulled.

I don?t care, though. Toys are fun. Especially these five, the most innovative playthings of the year.

As grad students at MIT a few years ago, Dave Merrill and Jeevan Kalanithi were looking to build computers that develop spatial-reasoning skills. The result?as Merrill explained in a hit 2009 TED talk?are these irresistible ?intelligent blocks.? Each block has an LCD screen and sensors to determine how it?s oriented and when it?s been moved. They?re also loaded with several games that take advantage of the blocks? spatial awareness?for instance, shape- and word-matching games in which you rotate and connect sequences across different blocks. Best of all, they require no tech expertise to set up and use, and they even come packaged with batteries. Within five minutes of cracking open the box, I was deeply immersed in a game.

Little Bits.

littleBits.

Think of these as Legos for electronics. Each littleBits block is a piece of an electrical circuit?a switch, a power source, or an endpoint like a light or a fan or a vibrating motor. It?s your job to stick them together in creative ways. The pieces snap and hold together magnetically, and because they?re color-coded and only snap in certain directions, they?re fantastically easy to learn. They?re recommended for kids 8 and above, but I bet even younger children can get the hang of these.

The only problem with littleBits is that they?re expensive. I found the starter kit limited, with too few interesting parts; the extended kit, though, is a blast. If you want to try something else in the same vein, Snap Circuits?an $80 set of modular electronic parts that snap together on a plastic circuit board?are slightly more complicated but also cheaper.

LeapFrog LeapPad2.

LeapFrog LeapPad2.

I was skeptical of a tablet computer for kids. Not because I think kids shouldn?t be using computers, but because when I give my 2-year-old my iPad, he usually navigates to the Netflix app and begins watching Curious George. In other words, he uses it as a TV.

And that kind of explains the idea behind the LeapPad2. It gives kids all the accoutrements of a grown-up tablet?a camera, a touchscreen, apps?but everything is rendered in big, kid-friendly plastic, and all of the experiences are nominally educational. I can?t tell you whether they?ll actually make your kid smarter??all things in moderation? is a good guideline for kids and electronics?but if you have a young child and a tablet computer, you understand how hard it is to keep the two separate. The LeapPad2 allows you to give him a taste of tablets without worrying he?ll veg out. Also, he can?t break this one as easily as he can smash your iPad Mini.

Furby, starts at $54, costs more depending on the color.

Furby.

Furby.

If you?ve been jonesing for the late 1990s? cultural infatuation with virtual pets, the re-engineered Furby is for you. A cuddly alien doll stuffed with robotic guts, Furby has no real purpose other than to sit there, wiggle her ears, scrunch her belly, and talk back to you. In that way she?s like a lot of members of your family. You keep her around because she sometimes does unexpectedly cute things, and because when she doesn?t, you feel some responsibility to mold her behavior. Yeah, it?s totally weird.

Unlike the old model, the new Furby is capable of developing a personality based on how you treat her. If you?re nice to her, she responds sweetly; if you jostle her, she may develop a juvenile attitude. That seems to have happened to mine; thanks to the companion iPhone app that translates Furbish to English, I gathered that a lot of her responses include the phrase ?OMG!? I suppose it?s good preparation for when my kid turns 14.

These things are a blast. Picture laser guns of yore, but without the hassle of a sensor vest?the guns detect and keep track of your hits and misses by themselves. They even keep track of ammo?when you?re out, you?ve got to reload?and they alert you to other players nearby. Though I only have two, I imagine they?re really fun in large groups. (They can accommodate up to two dozen players in multiple teams.)

You can also hook them up to your iPhone or iPod Touch. The companion app acts as an augmented reality viewfinder, showing you game stats as you aim your weapon. The app also lets you play a single-player video game, but that mode is kind of lame. One thing: The guns only fit older fourth-generation iPhones and iPod Touches; today?s bigger iPhone won?t fit in the weapon?s built-in cradle.

Verizon adds NFL Network and NFL RedZone to FiOS TV Online

Verizon adds NFL Network and NFL RedZone to FiOS TV Online

Those fortunate enough to be in a FiOS region have enjoyed the NFL's RedZone channel for years now, and those with iPads have been able to stream some of that content to their tablet since 2010. Viewing the NFL online, however, right in a desktop browser, has proven to be nearly impossible. Blame it on popularity, licensing, piracy concerns -- whatever -- but it seems that football fanatics now have one more reason to relocate to one of Verizon's 13 FiOS-ified states. The addition of "Watch NFL Network" to FiOS TV Online gives FiOS customers who receive NFL Network and NFL RedZone as part of their TV package the ability to view programming online from the two channels from anywhere in the US, with a broadband connection.

That also includes streaming access to full Thursday Night Football games, NFL Total Access, NFL GameDay, NFL AM and more. Live streaming of NFL RedZone will be made available each Sunday during the regular season, and while we wouldn't get our hopes up too high just yet, we can't help but be encouraged. Hans Schroeder, senior vice president of media strategy and development for the NFL, said: "This authentication agreement with Verizon is part of a larger NFL Media initiative to deliver NFL content to fans and consumers in as many ways possible." Perhaps you're talking about "more pay-TV providers," Mr. Schroeder?

Mourners gather at funeral for Chiefs' Belcher

By RACHEL COHEN

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:22 p.m. ET Dec. 12, 2012

DIX HILLS, N.Y. (AP) - Jovan Belcher was remembered Wednesday for the accomplishments of a life that ended so suddenly and violently.

Several hundred mourners gathered for the Kansas City Chiefs linebacker's funeral near his hometown on Long Island. The 25-year-old Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend on Dec. 1, then drove to the Chiefs' practice facility and committed suicide in front of team officials.

At Upper Room Christian Church on Wednesday, relatives wore black - and red, the Chiefs' color. Pastor Dawn Mixon shared that Belcher's mother, Cheryl Shepherd, described him as a "humble, kind young man." He had a soft spot for children and loved cartoons.

"We may not understand the reasons why we are here or understand what caused this tragedy," Mixon said.

At a celebration of Belcher's life, there were hints of the way it ended. A photo slide show played on a large screen above the stage, with images from Belcher's childhood through his football careers at nearby West Babylon High School and the University of Maine.

Then appeared the words "In loving memory of" Belcher and Kasandra Perkins, the mother of his 3-month-old daughter. After a series of pictures of Perkins and baby Zoey came the message, "Keep this little girl in your prayers."

"The legacy we pass on to her will be good," said his uncle, Davin Miles.

Next to an open casket were collages of photos and mementos from Belcher's playing career. An array of flowers spelled out W.B. for his high school.

Chiefs players and staff attended a memorial service for Belcher in Kansas City last week. His locker at their practice facility had been left intact after his death - his helmet, pads, laundry and shoes still sitting there the way he left them. As the Chiefs returned from an off day Wednesday, it had finally been cleaned out.

On a Saturday morning, the day before the team's game against the Carolina Panthers, Belcher shot the 22-year-old Perkins multiple times at their home. Police said Belcher and Perkins previously had been arguing.

Belcher then drove to Arrowhead Stadium, where he thanked coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli for all they'd done for him. As police arrived, Belcher slipped behind a car and put the gun to his head.

His path to becoming an NFL starter had been an unlikely one. Belcher did not play in college football's top division, and he wasn't drafted. But he made the Chiefs, becoming a full-time starter in 2010.

Bishop Stephanie Green described Belcher as "a man who did some awesome things - while other young men his age were out hustling, slinging and doing other things, he chose an education."

TekSavvy under pressure to reveal user details as L.A. film studio ...

If a California film production company gets its way, an Ontario Internet service provider could be handing over the identities of hundreds of customers alleged to have engaged in illegal downloading.

L.A.-based Voltage Pictures LLC has brought a motion with the Federal Court of Canada to force Chatham-based TekSavvy Solutions Inc. to disclose the names and addresses associated with about 2,000 internet protocol, or IP, addresses.

Our customers are just wondering what this really means for them. It?s a bit scary

In a lawsuit against as-yet-unnamed John and Jane Does (filed at the Federal Court in Toronto on Nov. 14), Voltage is seeking compensation under the federal Copyright Act for the unauthorized copying and distributing of its works through file sharing networks.

TekSavvy is not a party to the legal action but Voltage is asking the court to compel the independent ISP to turn over the relevant user information to help identify the alleged infringers.

The move comes within weeks of new copyright legislation coming into effect and shortly after a similar action that resulted in a judge ordering Internet providers to release subscriber names and details to NGN Prima Productions Inc.

That case involved 50 IP addresses, Postmedia?s Gillian Shaw reported.

In both cases, the production companies engaged the services of Montreal-based forensic investigation firm Canipre Inc., which used software to scan BitTorrent networks for copyrighted works and then identify the IP address of each ?seeder? or ?peer? offering the files for transfer or distribution.

During the two month period between Sept. 1 and Oct. 30, Canipre scanned BitTorrent networks searching for works belonging to Voltage, the production company said in a notice of motion dated Dec. 7.

The firm then used that information to identify transactions associated with IP addresses for customers of TekSavvy in Ontario.

?Once [Voltage] obtains the defendants? contact information from their ISPs, it will be able to name those defendants as parties to this claim,? Voltage said in its statement of claim.

TekSavvy said it will only provide customer details if required to do so by a court order.

Tina Furlan, director of press relations for the ISP, said the company received a list of more than 2,000 IP addresses. Some customers had more than one IP address associated with their account and TekSavvy has now sent out about 1,100 notices to customers informing them of the potential legal action and recommending they get legal advice.

?Our customers are just wondering what this really means for them. It?s a bit scary,? she said. ?Even customers who have not received the notice are quite concerned because they don?t know whether next month maybe they?ll be on that list.?

Concerns around disclosure of personal information aside, the penalties associated with copyright infringement are not as high as they once were.

The new law provides for a penalty from $100 to a maximum of $5,000 for all infringements related to personal-use that occurred prior to a legal action.

Under the old rules, the maximum fine was $20,000 per infringement, which remains the case for violations for commercial-use.

The Copyright Modernization Act, once known as Bill C-11, received royal assent in June and most of its provisions came into force on Nov. 7.

It provides that copyright holders can request that ISPs provide user information where there is a claim of copyright infringement.

In a blog post on the TekSavvy website, CEO Marc Gaudrault said he was ?puzzled? by Voltage?s approach.

?It seems contrary to the government?s intent with copyright reform which was to discourage file sharing lawsuits against individuals, while still protecting copyright holders? rights,? he said, adding that the government created a ?roadmap? for addressing file sharing issues, the starting point of which is a notification system to discourage infringement without immediately moving to the threat of a lawsuit or public disclosure of personal information.

?That system is not yet finalized though. In light of these factors, Voltage?s actions seem odd to us,? he said.

The motion to compel TekSavvy to disclose user details is set for Dec. 17.

Representatives from Voltage did not respond to a request for comment.

Flu Web Searches Predict Disease Outbreaks

DEAR ABBY: I have been married for 14 years to a man who had two failed marriages. I never felt insecure in my married life until I read his answers to a Yahoo Answers poll that asked, "Do you dream about the one that got away?" and, "Have you found the love of your life?"My husband responded that he thinks about her very often, especially on her birthday and Valentine's Day. To the other question he replied he had found the love of his life, but the relationship had ended in divorce, which he admitted was his fault.I know he was talking about his first wife. I feel so sad and insecure. ...

Recent surveys of small business owners by the National Federation for Independent Business (NFIB) suggest that entrepreneurs are uncertain about the future of the economy and the impact of issues such as tax policy and regulation on their businesses.

The response of these business owners has been to be cautious about investing in capital equipment, growing their inventories, and expanding their workforce.

In the most recent NFIB survey from November of 2012, uncertainty among entrepreneurs about future business conditions reached a record high, eclipsing the previous record for uncertainty set during the Carter Administration.?

However, even in challenging economic times such as these, there are pockets of opportunity to grow and expand your business.?

Mailvelope Offers Free, Easy-to-Use PGP Encryption for Gmail, Outlook, and Other Webmail Services

Mailvelope Offers Free, Easy-to-Use PGP Encryption for Gmail, Outlook, and Other Webmail Services Chrome/Firefox: It's no secret that email is grossly insecure. If you want a little privacy in your inbox, the easiest way to do it is to encrypt your messages, and Mailvelope offers free, OpenPGP encryption for most popular webmail services that's easy to configure and a breeze to use.

Mailvelope is in beta, and there's a full extension available for Chrome, and an early beta available for Firefox, but when we tested it both extensions worked well. Gmail/Google Apps, Outlook, Yahoo!, and GMX are all supported, and the app can be configured to support others. After installing the extension, you can generate your own public and private keys to use to encrypt messages in the extension's preferences. Once your keys are ready, the next time you compose a message, you'll see a lock in the compose window that you can click to encrypt your message. You can even use multiple keys for multiple recipients.

When you get an encrypted message, the process works in reverse. You'll see the encrypted message with a lock overlay over it, and you can click it to enter your key password. Mailvelope will search your saved keys to find the one needed, and decrypt the message for you.

If you're unfamiliar with how PGP encryption works, swapping public keys, and Mailvelope fits into all of it, check out their help guide here. It's very well put together, and will get you up to speed quickly.
