Flu Web Searches Predict Disease Outbreaks

DEAR ABBY: I have been married for 14 years to a man who had two failed marriages. I never felt insecure in my married life until I read his answers to a Yahoo Answers poll that asked, "Do you dream about the one that got away?" and, "Have you found the love of your life?"My husband responded that he thinks about her very often, especially on her birthday and Valentine's Day. To the other question he replied he had found the love of his life, but the relationship had ended in divorce, which he admitted was his fault.I know he was talking about his first wife. I feel so sad and insecure. ...

Recent surveys of small business owners by the National Federation for Independent Business (NFIB) suggest that entrepreneurs are uncertain about the future of the economy and the impact of issues such as tax policy and regulation on their businesses.

The response of these business owners has been to be cautious about investing in capital equipment, growing their inventories, and expanding their workforce.

In the most recent NFIB survey from November of 2012, uncertainty among entrepreneurs about future business conditions reached a record high, eclipsing the previous record for uncertainty set during the Carter Administration.?

However, even in challenging economic times such as these, there are pockets of opportunity to grow and expand your business.?

Mailvelope Offers Free, Easy-to-Use PGP Encryption for Gmail, Outlook, and Other Webmail Services

Mailvelope Offers Free, Easy-to-Use PGP Encryption for Gmail, Outlook, and Other Webmail Services Chrome/Firefox: It's no secret that email is grossly insecure. If you want a little privacy in your inbox, the easiest way to do it is to encrypt your messages, and Mailvelope offers free, OpenPGP encryption for most popular webmail services that's easy to configure and a breeze to use.

Mailvelope is in beta, and there's a full extension available for Chrome, and an early beta available for Firefox, but when we tested it both extensions worked well. Gmail/Google Apps, Outlook, Yahoo!, and GMX are all supported, and the app can be configured to support others. After installing the extension, you can generate your own public and private keys to use to encrypt messages in the extension's preferences. Once your keys are ready, the next time you compose a message, you'll see a lock in the compose window that you can click to encrypt your message. You can even use multiple keys for multiple recipients.

When you get an encrypted message, the process works in reverse. You'll see the encrypted message with a lock overlay over it, and you can click it to enter your key password. Mailvelope will search your saved keys to find the one needed, and decrypt the message for you.

If you're unfamiliar with how PGP encryption works, swapping public keys, and Mailvelope fits into all of it, check out their help guide here. It's very well put together, and will get you up to speed quickly.

Oregon lawmakers to vote on Nike expansion plan

John Kitzhaber says he'll call the Legislature into session Friday to create a law to give Nike its promise. (AP Photo/Don Ryan, File)

(AP) ? Athletic footwear and apparel giant Nike Inc. plans to expand its operations in Oregon and hire hundreds of workers but wants the government to promise that tax rules won't change, prompting a special session of the Legislature.

Gov. John Kitzhaber said he'll call lawmakers together Friday in Salem to create a new law authorizing him to grant Nike's wish, and legislative leaders said they'll go along.

The Legislature is due to meet in its regular annual session beginning Jan. 14, but Kitzhaber said Nike needed certainty sooner. The company was being wooed by other states, he said.

"Getting Oregonians back to work is my top priority," Kitzhaber said in a news conference.

Nike wants an agreement that its state income tax will continue to be based solely on the company's Oregon sales, regardless of any future changes in the tax code, for a negotiated time period. Before 2005, Oregon also included a company's in-state payroll and property in the corporate tax formula.

Kitzhaber is asking for authority to make such a guarantee if a company invests at least $150 million and hires 500 or more workers. Nike has not specified its expansion plans, and spokeswoman Mary Remuzzi wouldn't say how many people would be hired beyond the 500 required under the proposed legislation. The company hasn't decided where it would expand.

"We support this proposed legislation as a way to help us continue to grow in Oregon," Don Blair, Nike vice president and chief financial officer, said in a statement.

The proposal is not a tax break for Nike but rather a tool to offer tax certainty to companies planning big expansions, Kitzhaber said.

Nike employs 44,000 people globally, including 8,000 in Washington County, home to its world headquarters in the Portland suburb of Beaverton. The company said its Oregon workers make an average wage of more than $100,000.

Kitzhaber said he expects the Legislature to adopt the legislation in a one-day special session. House and Senate leaders from both parties responded positively to the governor's proposal.

"This is a rare opportunity and we're not going to miss it," said Democratic state Senate President Peter Courtney.

Nike began discussions with the governor's office about a month ago, Kitzhaber said.

The governor and Nike pointed to an economic impact study by AECOM that said a potential Nike expansion could create as many as 12,000 jobs and $2 billion a year in economic impact by 2020. But the actual impact is murky. The study was based on a theoretical Nike expansion, not necessarily any specific plans the company has. It counts hiring by Nike as well as a multiplier effect from those workers buying more goods and services.

Nike has been selling off brands and making other moves to focus on its most profitable businesses, which include its namesake Nike brand, Jordan, Converse and Hurley.

It sold its Cole Haan brand to private equity firm Apax Partners for $570 million in November and in October said clothing licensing company Iconix Brand Group Inc. would buy Umbro for $225 million.

Like most consumer product makers, Nike has faced rising costs for packaging, fuel and other raw materials.

In its most recent fiscal first-quarter, net income fell 12 percent as the boost from higher sales was offset by increased costs and ad spending. The company said then it was facing a slowdown of futures order growth, particularly in China. Those are orders from retailers of products that are scheduled for delivery between September 2012 and January 2013.

In November, Nike said it was boosting its dividend payment and planning a 2-for-1 stock split.

Companies typically split their stocks when they think the price of an individual share has gotten too expensive or if the stock is trading too far above similar companies' stock. Nike stock is up about 2 percent since the beginning of the year.

Nike built its current headquarters campus near Beaverton in 1990. It had a scuffle with city leaders in 2005 when it filed a lawsuit to find out if Beaverton leaders had plans for annexing company property. A judge found that city officials were in contempt for deliberately withholding public documents from Nike, including a draft annexation plan that showed city leaders considered forcing the company's headquarters into city limits in 2002. Nike got a 35-year exemption from forced annexation in Beaverton.

Either the governor or the Legislature itself can call lawmakers into session at times other than the state Constitution specifies.

For much of the state's history, the Legislature's regular sessions have been held every other year, at the beginning of odd-numbered years. That's the kind of session the Legislature is scheduled to begin early next year.

In recent years, the Legislature has moved to meet annually, running briefer sessions in even-numbered years. Those led to voter approval of a constitutional amendment in 2010 that called for annual sessions.

Records list 38 special sessions since Oregon's statehood, ranging from one day on eight occasions to 37 days in 1982.

Romanians vote in poll that may reopen political spat

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Romania's prime minister was headed for victory in parliamentary elections on Sunday that could set off another round of a power struggle with the rightist president and complicate talks for a new IMF deal.

Victor Ponta's leftist Social Liberal Union (USL) will win the most votes and possibly a clear majority, opinion polls showed. But analysts said President Traian Basescu might use his powers to ask one of his own allies to try to form a government.

Any prolonged period without a new administration in place would unnerve markets and raise questions about how Romania would obtain a new International Monetary Fund deal once the current agreement expires in early 2013.

Heavy snow, rain and fog across the Balkan country delayed the opening of some polling stations but Ponta said all citizens were able to cast ballots. Polls will close at 9 p.m. (1900 GMT) with first results due early on Monday.

"I am convinced that today Romania will write a new page in its history and things will get better," he said in his Targu Jiu constituency, a mining town a few hours from Bucharest.

The former communist country has made progress in some areas since the 1989 revolution that overthrew dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, but although it joined the European Union in 2007, it remains the bloc's second poorest member.

Romania lags regional peers Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic and struggles to supply running water and reliable electricity to some of its 19 million people. Long-term reforms such as privatization of inefficient state companies and an overhaul of health care have failed to materialize, and the economy is struggling to recover from a deep recession.

The leu fell to a record low against the euro in August during an attempt by Ponta to remove the conservative Basescu from office, using tactics which the EU and United States said undermined the rule of law.

At the time, Basescu said he would never again name Ponta as prime minister. This week, he said only that he would appoint someone in the best interests of the country.

The USL has benefited from disenchantment with Basescu and the previous government, which pushed through unpopular austerity measures such as salary cuts and higher sales tax. But lackluster economic growth will give the next administration little room to ease cost cuts and tax rises.

"I gave a chance to the team which is now ruling (USL)," said former textile worker Doina Isopescu, speaking in freezing rain outside a polling station in a communist-era Bucharest neighborhood. I'm fed up with cuts, cuts and again cuts."

NO HOPE

The USL has scored at least 57 percent in three opinion polls published in December and Romania's complicated electoral system - combining constituencies and proportional representation - favors large parties.

One possibility would be for Basescu to ask someone other than Ponta from within the USL to become prime minister, using the argument that it is a coalition of different political groups rather than a party, according to analysts.

If the USL falls short of a majority, he could also ask an ally from the Right Romania Alliance (ARD) - in second place in polls with about 20 percent - to try to form a coalition.

"It is unlikely that the process of electing a new cabinet will be a smooth one and we expect temporary leu depreciation and higher leu yields until Romania has a new government," said UniCredit analyst Dan Bucsa.

Less than half of electorate, estimated at 18.3 million, was likely to vote, analysts said, due to a deep dissatisfaction with politicians, many of whom voters view as corrupt.

"Romania's political class is all horrible," said Anton Popescu, who lives off a pension of 900 lei ($250) a month. "I have no hope for better times after the election. I just hope it won't be worse than it already is."

Have you ever had those questions in your mind whenever you face the decision to learn a language? I bet you have. Well, one consideration of the easiness of a language depends much on the language that the learners know. A Korean friend told me that it is easier to learn Chinese Mandarin than English. If we take a look deeply in the structure and vocabulary of Korean language, it has much more similarities with Chinese Mandarin than that in English. Moreover, Korean used Chinese characters along with the Korean characters in the past.

I found an interesting article listing top 10 languages to study including facts about each of them. There are two categories that I would like to point here.
